    Crappy NTL Speeds?

    Ive a engineer visit tomorrow as for each of the evenings over the last few weeks Ive been getting between 100-300k download speeds, after an initial period of getting over 1.1Mb when they upgraded me to 10Mb service recently.

    I was convinced it was a problem with the hardware until today when I tried downloading ITunes midday and got the 1+Mb Id expect. Tried again just now, and its back down to 250k again.

    Not only that, Im forever dropping out of Xbox Live games, and get very bad lag.

    Ive done a whole heap of network testing and troubleshooting, and am reasonably sure its not related to my own network config (Im in a Domain, with 2k3 server handling DNS and DHCP, behind a router linked to the NTL 250 modem).

    Im really hoping its a local issue that the engineer can resolve, than a problem with bad contention ratios and people hammering the service causing the drop in speeds.

    I live in the London area, and wondered what other people were experienceing from NTL, in particular the 10Mb service.

    NTL man said its network related, which I agree with as theres nothing wrong with the modem, think it might be a faulty UBR (universal bus router) which NTL networks will need to look at. This morning I tried to DL Itunes and got the expected 1.1+ mb speed. Bet if I tried the same on an evening it would be around the 2-300k mark.

      My speeds all over the place at the moment. I called NTL who said there is a problem at the in the South Manchester area. They are in the process of collecting information for the engineers. Why they dont just send them out I have no idea !

      They also said it could be up to a week before this is sorted.

      Could be a phone call to the billing dept... I feel a free month coming on.

        I only have a 1mb line, but over last couple of days, steadily max's out at anything between 30kb and 130kb, fook knows what their upto. Phoned them this morning and apparently it's all sorted now, oh and there goes a pig past my window.

              Last night I was pulling a 'whopping' 30-50k downloading Itunes from Apple. Ive been testing it each evening for the last week, the highest speed Ive had is just under 200k. Pitiful for a 10MB line.

              Still, my case has been escalated to NTL networks, and Ive another engineer visit tomorrow.

              Interestingly, although they offer a 10MB service, their only guarantee is that you get above 3MB.

              Once (if) its all sorted ill be pushing for some free months also.

                not pimping my site or anything (bit old but video links work) but try and grab something from this page;

                should max out most peoples connection as hosted on a usually nifty server. Will try when I get home to see if I'm sorted.
