    Gamecube component problems/issues

    Hi,

Having just got a US GC again and some official component cables, I'm a bit lost. Firstly, the picture really isn't that good-there's a lot of jaggies all over the place, I thought it would be really good-it looks worse than RGB on my old CRT TV (I'm using a Panasonic LCD HDTV now). I've tried MKDD which has progressive scan...

Also, how on earth can you get audio out of the console if the component cables just have the 3 video connectors? I really don't understand!

Audio output is via the composite through the analog socket.

Sorry...I don't actually understand what that means..! Where is an 'analog socket'?

On the back of the Gamecube, there are three sockets, the power, analog and digital.

The analog is for standard composite/RGB and the digital is for component. You have to use the composite cable to output sound, as the digital output socket is only for video and not audio.

Oh-sorry, I just stuck the cable in without realising there were the two AV outs, I understand you now!

I hoped as I had a look that I had accidentally put the component cables into the analog socket, explaining the disappointing picture...but no.

I reckon you'll be wanting to check the setup of your TV and checking if it's doing a horrible job of upscaling the GC's prog output to some other resolution, thus resulting in jaggies.

The TV's a Panasonic TX-32LXD52, as far as I know it doesn't upscale itself, I certainly can't see anything in the menu indicating a choice of resolutions. Whilst on the topic, it seems most people with HDTV's can view if the TV is outputting in 50 or 60hz, 480p or 720p etc..I see absolutely no way of seeing this, the menus are very limited.

With my HDTV, there's a button on the remote that says "Info", and that's how you view the resolution. There's no option through the TV itself though.

Oh, also, the Gamecube looks gorgeous through component on my TV. Even the PS2 through component looks excellent, and everyone slates that.

On my TV, I press OK to view what is being outputted by the device.

Ok, found it eventually and it does say 480p..but everything is still really quite jaggy. I don't know what's wrong-the Xbox 360 looks fantastic on it, but this just looks crap. Also, normally when my TV's in a HD mode, it doesn't allow me to change the aspect ratios yet it does with the GC and component-is this normal?

Does that work with all devices, as I'm sure I checked with PS2 and Cube, Xbox etc bfore and it didn't work. Only when on the PC did it show what the output is..?

If its outputting at anything other than 480p/720p/1080i then pressing OK won't show anything, otherwise it does work for everything.

do you not have to hold down "B" button or something when booting the games for Progressive mode? are you doing that?

Mario Kart asks if you want to enter progressive mode if it detects a cable, and I did press yes..so I'm still confused.
