    PS2 Scart 'RGB' Problem

    Very strange problem this.

I have an official Sony RGB Scart for my PS2 (there's a reason I can't use Component - save for another topic), and if I plug into the AV1 (note, the RGB port) on my TV.... it runs in Composite =/

If I plug is via the Scart Switcher (one of them Argos ones), same problem... BUT... if I plug my Freeview box into the Scart switcher also and turn it on... I got lovely RGB on my PS2

So I have RGB on my PS2... as long as I plug it via the Scart switcher and also have my Freeview box turned on...

Any idea what the problem is?

Sounds like it could be a voltage issue on the pin that tells the TV to switch to RGB mode. I?m guessing it?s not strong enough in the PS2 lead you have (odd considering it?s an official cable).

In the last situation you describe (via switcher with Freeview turned on), the lead from the Freeview box is telling the TV to go into RGB mode.

If you have the Argos SCART switcher and you have the RGB switch set to on, it should force the TV into RGB mode no matter whether you have the auto-switch voltage connected in the SCART lead or not, although you might have a different model to mine as I got mine upwards of 4 years ago.

If you're into your soldering, it's easy, open up your SCART end and check for a wire going to pin 8 from the PS2. If there is, the PS2's sending a voltage to the SCART socket, this is a good thing as pin 8 tells your TV to auto-switch to the AV channel. Simply solder a 100ohm resister between pins 8 and 16 and you should be right for auto-switching to RGB. Pin 16 is the one you need to send a voltage to in order for RGB to be automatically set.

Might have to do that vertigo.

It's just a pain. I'd prefer to cut the switcher out completely and just plug the PS2 straight into the TV. The picture I get from the RGB Scart is excellent. Very strange that it should have trouble.

Otherwise buy one from Lik Sang for about 3 quid
Although the one they sent me auto-switches to 16:9, so I'll have to change the resistor in it coz it irritates me having to manually set my TV to 4:3 whenever I want to use the PSone.
Switchers are good so that you don't wreck your TV's SCART socket though. A new TV costs more than a new switcher.

Does your TV have manual control over the SCART input? If you can set AV1 to 'RGB' rather than 'Auto' then you shouldn't have any problems. Thats what I do with my Loewe.
