    Windows Xp

Does anyone have the Japanese version?
I wonder if you could switch all the menus to English!?
Does anyone find that WinXP actually does anything better than 98 did?
What made it worth it for you?

I don't have the Japanese version, just plain ol' XP Home as purchased from Currys. As a by the by, as long as you've got the install CD to a qualifying product (say, Windows ME) you can do a clean install with the "upgrade version", it just asks to see the old disc during the install.

XP is just so much more nice than '98 or ME, its well worth the upgrade (if your machine can handle it). No nasty crashes, fewer memory leaks, multiple users is actually practical to use, Maya won't run at all on anything other than 2k or XP, were the three main things for me.

800MHz should be fine, I'm only on a 900MHz Athlon on my desktop and thats silky.

As long as you do something about that 128Mb memory you should be fine. Watch out though, laptops generally have weird-ass hardware in them, so getting all the relevant drivers downloaded and stored somewhere before you start is a pretty important thing to do.

If you're happy with winME then its probably not so serious to upgrade.

I found that I got at least a crash an evening with ME, but XP has only ever died on me when trying to do something monumentally silly (like accidentally opening a 4Gb core file in Wordpad).

What on earth do you want the JPN version for?

Nope, foreign versions have the menus in their respective languages. For obvious reasons

XP is based around the old NT kernel, therefore it crashes considerably less often than anything win9x based (95, 98, the shambolic ME). In fact, You could count the number of crashes I've had on XP since I built this machine last October on Captain Hook's bad hand.

              See above.

              Hope that helps.

Thanks, the reason im interested in knowing about the Japanese version is because im stuck in Japan, and the English version of XP is hard to come by...aa well I could order from a online store, ..but anyway installing English XP on a Japanese PC could be a no go??

You can install English Windows XP on a Japanese PC, you will need to tell it you have a Japanese Keyboard tho. You may have some problems with some Jap software tho.

Japanese XP will be fun to use as all the menus and messages will be in Japanese and no you can't change them back.

Japanese windows can store filenames in Japanese which confuses the hell out of Windows and MS-DOS on older O/Ses, XP handles Japanese names better then Win NT, 98, etc but you may get the odd error. :/
