    whats wrong with my telly?

This is quite wierd! When i play certain pal gamecube games and switch to 60 hz the screen gets horizontally squashed! The top and bottom borders double in size! I thought perhaps my telly isn't 60hz compatible but i thought the screen would roll up and down if it wasnt.. I'm using composite if that helps.

It may be that when when you're popping it in 60Hz you're automatically sticking it in NTSC mode which means that you're using less lines and therefore you're getting bigger boarders.

FYI, this will probably be moved to the 'Ask the Forum' section of the forum if you can't find it later.

Perhaps you TV is interpretting the 60hz as a widescreen mode, do you have any options like 4:3 ,16:9 or letterbox that you could change?

It sounds like your TV is misunderstanding the signal coming to it and thinks it should be trying to display it in widescreen. Change your TV's screen setting manually to whatever you want it to be instead of leaving it on auto.

Open your scart lead up and look at the connections.

Do you have a wire going pin 8 and then a link going to pin 16 from it?

If you want to avoid 16:9 switching you can remove the wire to pin 8, but you need to make sure it still goes to pin 16 or you will loos rgb mode, there is probably a resistor linking pin 8 to 16 to reduce the voltage pin 16 needs to between 1-3v, make sure you keep this in.

You will loose auto switching if you remove pin 8 though, ie you will have to manually choose the av channel.

****, just re read your original post, if you are using composite and it is forcing your screen to 16:9 you must have a setting in your menu somewhere for auto widescreen switching, you need to turn this off.

It sees the small black borders and adjust the aspect ratio automatically, I never got thsi feature on any TV cause it always put it in anamorphic mode, but if you see black borders you would want it in zoom mode, so you fill the screen without see any borders at all.

Anyway find that setting and turn it off, you can have scart detect enabled though, this will force it to 16:9 and RGB when it should do.

Like it was said earlier, just press your AV button a couple of times to cycle through the settings.. Works for me!

Hey guys thanks for replys. I did lose this thread for a bit but found it again.

Em it isnt a wide screen telly just a regular 4:3 jvc. So Im a bit confused..

It does only say 50hz on the back but ive had a 50hz tv before and got the flipping scramled screen when attemting to play anything at 60hz. It seems to be ok with this telly i just dont get it.. Ill try buggering about with the menu a bit, although there isnt that much of a menu if u ask me.. perhaps it would be different if i were to use an actual rgb cable?
