    PAL Cube and S-Video?

hey, i require a little bit of help with getting my cube running properly. since i've had the thing i've been running it composite (i know, i know ). until such a time when i can hook everything up with component cables i acquired an s-video cable from play-asia. when i hook it up i get sound but no picture.

i am quite confused as to why this is as i've had other consoles/freeview box hooked up and working through s-video on my tv/projector before.

does a PAL cube just not output or what??

**edit: i really should read descriptions before buying things...

Note: not compatible with PAL Game Cube machines or the Panasonic Q
    problem 'solved'

one thing though, does this puppy work with a SNES/N64 'cos i'll use it for those if so.

In've used s-video on my pal n64 so i guess that ought to work for them too (i made exactly the same mistake as you with my cube) though i found my 64 didn't much like the rgb scart cable (that i usually use for my gamecube) either. Crazy stuff

I've actually seen MadCatz S-Video cables for the Cube in Dixons in the UK. Very unusual.

Nintendo took the S-Video output off the later N64s for some reason; I think it happened around the time of the switch to the silly iMac clear plastic ones, but it might have been a little bit before.

Yeah, Dixons and PC World didn't do much research on what the PAL Cube could and couldn't do. I bought my S-Video cable from there (for my US Cube, before I had a Component input).

My pikachu shaped n64 doesn't work in s-video, but my old black one does

Why do Nintendo pull this ****? Surely it must cost more to go through the process of removing these things?
Why do they feel a need to dictate what video connection we can use? What do they gain from it?

It must be about cost-cutting. They must have serous agreements with chip manufacturers and save 0.00001p on every Digital-to-Analogue chip if they remove the features that probably won't be used much. For example, notice them removing the Component capability from the most recent GameCubes, despite the fact that most of the necessary electronics were actually in the end of the cable.

Its crap because it means that you only have the choice of composite and RF on later N64s

Suppose it does them good in the long run... just that the end result is making their own consumers jump through hoops in order to run the machine in a manner that suits them.

*has his GameCube running through VGA cause Nintendo don't want me to :P *

Truly bizarre, I actually wouldn't buy the system because of that.

Yes - I mistakenly bought an s-video cable for my PAL cube as well, and then put it into service on my black N64.

                              Just done a little experiment.

I have tried the svideo lead on my clear coloured jpn N64's and they all work fine.

Must just be the pal clear editions that are affected.
