My guess is that it is something to do with the 360 rather than something to do with my TV. Otherwise, why would some games have frame rate issues with VGA and others not?

Having used the VGA cable since I got one a week after launch, I'm going back to component -even though the component PQ is noticeably slightly worse.

Its not just with the 360. My DC does in in 640x480 VGA. Most noticable in games that run very smoothy (for example Ikaruga). It runs very smooth for 5/6 seconds, then there is a slight frame judder. TBH it is only noticable if you really squint and look for it.

I've also noticed the juddering on my Samsung LCD, not only with the text in Ridge Racer but during the game as well (mostly noticable when the camera is panning around the car or showing the scenery at the start of a race). It's not a huge problem, just a brief skip every now and then.

I dropped the res down to 1280x720 and it seemed to help a bit, but it's still there.

I've been meaning to test component in 720p, but I only have a Joytech cable which gives me an awful picture at that res.

That describes exactly what I was getting with RR6. I didn't test it extensively at lower VGA resolutions (eg 640x480) but it did still seem to be there.

With my MS component cable, the effect is gone. The picture quality isn't quite as good as VGA at 1360x768, but it is still fantastic.

The Joytech component cable looks decent at 1080i, but horrible at 720p

Which VGA cable are you using, I have exactly the same tv as you and Im using the Joytech cable.

The framerate drop got so bad in PGR3 I had to drop it to 1280x720 and even then Im pretty sure Im still getting some dropped frames.

I'm not sure who you are addressing. I'm using the Joytech VGA cable though.
