Hey guys, before I get into this, thanks for any reply or suggestion because I'm in a bit of a state:
I turned on my PC a few days ago, it said that there was a serious error with my GPU, it had to be restarted but everything should be cool now. I'd never had that message before and I had a VPU recover before, but nothing serious. Sent off the problem to MS and they said that I should download the newest Catalysts and this .net passport thing for Windows.
I did both, downloaded the newest ATI Catalyst Drivers (6.xx) they were 100% compatible with my X800 and I got that MS thing which was directly linked to - .net something-or-other.
I installed the MS thing, restarted, a weird memory error message thing game up, it just flashed for a second-or-two. I think I saw the word memory but there was a long string (something like Aqr44.6432n.rnthaX) with the word error. It was a blue screen of death that occurred after windows had started to load, where the log-in screen would normally go. It automatically restarted and loaded fine. I uninstalled my GPU drivers, restarted, no problems. Installed the catlysts - no problems.
Used the PC for a few hours, turned it off. Turned it on again and then that message popped up again (the weird one that occurred during start-up fast the .net thing was installed), but I could just close the box as it was after I logged in this time. I wish I made a note of it. I continued to use the PC though and it was fine, figured it was a one off. After I restarted then it's just not worked at all.
First it said C:\windows\pci.sys was missing. Wouldn't get even start to load windows, said to repair it using the WindowsXP CD-ROM. I stuck that in, but thought to load into safe mode first. Started to load up, said another file was missing and asked if I'd like to keep going anyway? Sure, then it just goes black, nothing happens. Restart, and try again and it manages to go fine into safe mode. I roll back to 2 days before I installed that windows thing and nothing's changed. Except that now the MS thing that I'd downloaded and the Cat drivers are no longer on the desktop so I'm not exactly sure what I've installed. It won't let me into windows properly, but I can get into safe-mode now.
I can get into repair mode through the windows disc, but it just leaves me with a command prompt and I have no idea where to go.
It seems like there was a minor problem with my GPU, maybe too hot or something, it seemed to be ok though. I installed this .net thingy and it started to play up. And those new ATI Cats may have just pushed it off the edge.
I don't really do anything weird with my computer. I'm behind my uni firewall and antivirus which updates daily so that's good. I've got windows security updates downloading as soon as they're released. I don't fanny around with regedit or anything, just browse forums and porn in firefox. The odd document and game but I've not installed anything new recently.
I've got all my programs and Windows installed on my C:\ partition, all my music on the D:\ partition and my games and videos installed on the E:\ partition. I figure if I have to reinstall windows I can just format the C:\ and reinstall all my programs with minimal interference to the other drives - eg. I'm not going to lose my music.
I assume that if I reinstall XP over my old one it's just probably going to be ok... but not exactly the best fix; possibly leading to further issues in the future.
I can get into safe mode and command prompt so I have a few options. I can get drivers and stuff, so that's not too bad... I'm just not sure where to go though. What the best course of action is or if there are any tricks?
If something is not clear then just post it and I'll try and tell you exactly what I'm on about, but the above is pretty much all I can remember.
I'm using:
Windows XP SP2
X800 XT (or XL the better one, I can't remember) - Newest official drivers.
Shuttle XPC P 2500G (IIRC) - Basic Drivers
Thanks for any help you can give. I'm going back tomorrow afternoon, so any suggestions you can give before then would be warmly received.
-Mike
