Swap Magic without slide card?

I just checked if my Swap Magic (DVD - 2.0 EUR Version) still works, since I intend to sell it.
It booted up and gave me that 'insert disc' screen. For fun I just opened the disc tray via the open button on the PS2, put a game inside and pressed the X-button. And to my surprise the game loaded fine. I used a Pal PS2 game since I no longer have PS2 imports.

What I?m wondering about now, is if it booted up fine because I inserted a Pal disc, or whether that slide card trick is not neccessary at all.

Unfortunately, I never tried using only the boot disk without the slide card while I still had imports. (or it didn?t work and I can?t remember)

So, could anyone confirm if it is possible to just use the boot-CD?

It'll work fine if you put in a PAL game because the PAL game would have the correct protection ring.

Since imports/backups would not have the correct protection ring, you need to use the slide tool to trick the PS2 into thinking you have not changed the disc, this doesn't attempt to re-check the protection ring.

btw ditch the slide tool and use a flip top shell, then you won't **** up your drive motor.
