BoF III needs firmware 2.5 or above I believe, it should tell you when you try and start the game if you need to update your firmware or not.

You need to download an application called Fastloader. This will allow booting of games on any PSP regardless of firmware version (Tales of Eternia, for example).

It will not work on games that use a specific feature added in the newer firmwares (GTA, foe example, used the AVC coded added in 2.0), but give it a go anyway, as most games don't actually require these.

If it still does not work, you need to update, or wait for a homebrew solution to get around this.

Most games are following GTA and requiring features from 2.0 while forcing an update to 2.5 or 2.6, so the tricks to skip the updates don't work for much new stuff now. I'd just upgrade - there's a way to run certain homebrew stuff on any firmware right up to 2.6 out now and it's improving all the time.

AM I correct in saying that if I buy a Jap PSP game then it wont work on a new UK PSP due to the firmware??

No, all PSP games are completely universal and the only thing that can stop them running is if they require the latest firmware and the PSP doesn't have it installed. The only things that have region coding are UMD films, but even then the UK and Japan are the same region so you'll be able to play UK UMDs on it.
