Do the original xbox live starter kits work on the 360?

I know that old xbox live accounts transfer from an original xbox to a 360 however, it is cheaper for me to get a xbox live starter kit with project gotham 2 for the old xbox than a new 360 live starter kit.

Basically can I use these old style xbox live codes straight into a 360?
