    Scart quality

I recently bought a neo geo aes from Neo Zeed of this very forum and hooked it up via scart and BOOM! what an image, pin sharp clarity and fantastic colour saturation. My question is how come a 15 year old console is putting the my xbox, dc and ps2 to shame in the image quality stakes despite every console using scart too. Is there considerable variation between the quality of scart cables, both the dc and xbox ones are unofficial that i picked up for less than a fiver and the dont seem to be any different at all to the image produced via composite.

    What is going on here?

Well sounds like they aren't wired for RGB. Disassemble the heads to make sure. Even so, the Xbox's RGB SCART output isn't that fantastic.

What would i be looking for out of interest. I'm pretty ignorant on the topic, is there scart and rgb scart? I just always assumed scart was scart and that was the end of the story.

Xbox's RGB is ****e no matter what cable you use.

Have you ever played a SNES in full RGB? It's surprising how good the older consoles are at handling RGB.

Dreamcast, PS2, and especially Gamecube all offer fantastic RGB support.

        ------------------

You have scart, which is the block. The scart needs to be fully RGB wired in order for it to be RGB scart (obviously)

You may only have one RGB scart socket on your TV - if you have 2 sockets it's likely only one will carry an RGB signal.

I can't play in any other signal (apart from HD of course) - I refuse to use AV scart or composite.

It's crazy how many people are jumping on the HD bandwagon without even realising RGB scart exists.

You might want to think about getting an RGB block splitter and plugging it into your RGB socket. Saves knackering it by changing leads all the time.

SCART is fairly flexible, it can be wired for composite, S-Video, RGB or even component. Look for pins 15, 11 and 7 for Red, Green and Blue and make sure they are wired and pin 8 should be wired with a resistor going to pin 16.

...Or just go on ebay and buy fully wired RGB leads for everything you've got.

My PSone/2 cable came from game and cost ?2.99 - My modded cube cable cost ?40.

I have 3 scart sockets so perhaps only one does indeed carry the rgb signal, but if this is the case i can't beleive i havent noticed this before. Ill try them when i get home. As for the xbox suckin at rgb, what then would be by best option for connecting it to a standard crt television?

As for the dc, ive never been so dissapointed in my life. From going from vga to scart is a shock to the system. I swear down the image looks like as it was rf, awful white lines around every object and the image is skewed at either side of the tv (its widescreen)

                This is optional.

And my XBox doesn't suck at RGB. I think the main thing is that the XBox's composite encoder is actually quite good compared to what we're used to seeing from older machines, so the difference between composite and RGB on the XBox is not as obviously pronounced. Mine definitely doesn't suck though. Perfectly clear from where I'm sitting.

By the way, you can get RGB cables for most systems from Lik Sang for next to nothing. I've bought a few from them and had no problems whatsoever with them and they're good quality and nicely built.

Yeah mine isnt bad but boy does it get trounced by the archaic neo.

I'm not certain but can it also depend on the strength/quality of signal that the console's internal circuitry actually outputs? I don't think there's much you can do about that.

assuming your tv hasn't got component then rgb is the only way to go... looks perfectly fine on my crt, so much so that people have actually commented on the picture quality.

meh, i dunno... looks good to me.

                          Seriously, are you insane?

The DC has the best RGB Scart output of any console EVER. I'm not even a DC fan, I just really thought the picture was amazing. Didn't matter whether you used a cheap cheap cable, still pissed all over my ?35 PS2 SCART.

No. The dc is my favourite console of all time, i even fervently stuck with 2 years after its demise whilst eschewing the current gen despite alll it had to offer and this purely stemed from my fanboy devotion to the console and nothing to do with any negative feeling against sony and microsoft. But as for the picture on MY tv, it sucks. I hate it and am really disappointed. It might have something to do with my dc, the skewed image at either side is awful.

                            Remember i'm a vga snob

Am I the only one that finds VGA disappointing? It produces a crystal clear picture but the problem is the picture is just TOO sharp. It shows up all the jagged edges, especially in 2D games. I used to have a DC VGA box and tried running several games through a 19" Mitsubishi CRT including Guilty Gear X. The game actually looked worse than on TV since jaggies on the sprites became visible, whereas my TV produced a picture that was just as good but without any visible jaggies.
