    various Dreamcast questions

I'm once more trying the Dreamcast again, and because of my past experiences with the DC, i'm just playing a handful of yarr games before I decide to go with it or not.

I have a few questions though. I can sort of understand Ntsc games defaulting to 50hz on my pal unit via Utopia/self boot. But will Dc-X let me use 60hz, or are there some other tricks?

How much should I expect to pay for a regular jap console? I understand Hello kitty/ Sakura Taisen models hit ?80+, but all i need is a base unit.

Is VGA supported by the majority of games, and is the improvement worth however much the vga adapters go for (guide price?)

    Thanks in advance

If you can get hold of a later copy of The Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine, there's an A-Z review list that lets you know what PAL games are VGA compatible.

Thanks, but I'm more interested in japanese games

I will check it out though as a partial reference though

        1) I don't have tested it but it is why the DC-X exists normally.
        2) around 45? in my town.
        3) http://www.shinforce.com/dreamcast/V...patibility.htm Not complete but always useful. I haven't tested a VGA Box either.

The VGA adaptor makes a world of difference, the ?20 they commonly go for is an absolute bargin for the results.

Nearly all the high-profile & recommended DC games support VGA. Probably at least 90% of them. It will say so on the box/spine card if they do.

My collection is by no means huge, but I only have 3 games that aren't compatible. Even then, I'd only consider one of them to be a must-have (Bangaioh).

What happen when a title isn't compatible with VGA?
Does it display a normal screen or a black one?

You get a message saying "This game does not support the A/V cable currently connected to the main console. Turn off the power and replace the cable"

You can trick many non-VGA games into booting in VGA though, as long as you have a VGA box with lets you switch into S-Video (pretty much any third party box).
Boot up in S-Video, switch into VGA just as the 'Produced by...' screen is going to appear. Doesn't work on all games, but works on many.

I got a japanese dreamcast from hellbaby a few days ago. no need to worry now as its hardmodded and boots right into 60hz

It also came with a VGA adapter. While the results are lovely on a 15in crt monitor, (is it a higher res?), they are quite bad on my 26in lcd tv. Doesn't fill the screen properly, has vertical "streaks" and can seem a little dark. SF III:third strike doesn't look too bad, but other titles like Shemnue II and THPS2 look dreadful. Is it the vga box (3rd party), or just my tv taking a dislike?

I did also find it interesting that running pal games on the jp system makes them run in japanese mode at first - just like the early MD stuff
