    Gamecube Laser Question...

    Hi all,
Had a question about the GC's laser and reliability.
Wondered how the laser stands up if you have a Viper or Xeno GC modded unit and are running games..that are shall we say 'not endorsed by Nintendo'.
I know PS2 lasers aren't particularly great, so wondered if the GC's are more resilient??
    Cheers

The GameCube laser seems to like 'backup' discs even less than most consoles, the bioses for these modchips have all sorts of routines and read-retry techniques to compensate for the laser tripping up.
Software mod solutions such as GCOS used to require you to tweak the PAT of your laser to get it to read reliably, though it's since adopted the aforementioned routines.

As for actual damage though, I'd say more damage comes from using full-sze DVD's on a motor not deisigned for it.

      interesting, thanks Jake!
Most reliable laser on any console reading 'backups' would have to be my old original U.S PSX, but I know one of my old DC's died a death and ran through 2 Ps2's lasers (that was just booting originals, bloody Sony)
      Cheers Jake
