    S-Video: Laptop -> TV

I'm a bit backwards when it comes to PC's but was wondering if this is as straightforward as it would appear.

My laptop has an S-vid socket and so does my TV. If I get an S-vid->S-vid lead will my laptop display show on my TV? Simple as that?

Just thought it's be useful for showing family and friends pictures etc. Not expecting a wonderful output to replace the laptop screen for normal use or anything (but that would be nice)!

Get a decent s-video cable and your good to go. You might have to lower your output res too, depending what your graphics is.

Sweet - will look on ebay for something long and relitively good so I can sit on the sofa in comfort with the pic on the screen.

      Thanks for the help.

I bought a s-video to scart lead from Comet for mine, does exactly the same thing, just remember sound still comes from the laptop though.

Personally, I added a wire from the line-out to the audio inputs on the scart-block as well; otherwise stereo is completely confusing.

It's pretty simple, but a lot of people have problems with TV-Out issues. It's really annoying at times. One time, I thought my card was shot because I could only see the picture in black & white. Solution: Turn on the S-Video. For example, I have two AV-channels that support S-Video on my Panasonic TV but to have the S-Video to be displayed properly, it has to be turned on by pressing the channel button a second time. Annoying.

The lead arrived and it's not quite as simple a I hoped

All connects up fine but I can't make the laptop display swap to the TV. I can do it as a multiple monitor but it will always default to the laptop screen as the primary. That means that if I open the picture viewing software and move it to the TV screen, when I start a slide show it runs on the laptop.

I can't see a way of turning off the laptop screen and just using the s-vid as a monitor lead so to speak. When a normal monitor is plugged in I can press Function+F7 to swap between laptop/monitor/both all displaying the same image but that doesn't work on the s-vid apparently.

It's an IBM laptop if that's any help. Any ideas?

Guess your using XP, not used mine on my TV for a long while, but once I'd right clicked on the desktop, display output (?) properties and selected the S-Vid output it would stay on that no matter what (until I changed the display back to the laptop screen).

Can't remember the exact option you need to go into, if no-one can help you I'll have a look tonight.

Is XP yeah. Don't see a s-vid option when I right click desktop then proporties then settings. All I have is what's in the attached pic.

I can't do it via that screen either, mine (Samsung) is a case of right clicking on desktop, then a series of menu's direct off there, display properties/output/TV iirc, try pressing FN & F1 that might work.

Probably silly point, but you must have the S-Vid lead in for the option to appear.

Can't do it here at work so prob wont be able to try till tomorrow now. Will scour the options screens once I plug the lead in, cheers.

Pic is right clicking on my desktop, then following sub-menu's, S-Vid lead not plugged in - normally it appears on the list below monitor, hope it helps.

Without my s-vid plugged in either I have none of those options in the middle section:
                            Save as scheme...
                            Graphics Options
                            Display modes

Something I need to turn on or change to activate them maybe?

                            Just this.

Don't know, mine was automatically on, looks like it's a job for Google or the IBM helpdesk, good luck.
