Samsung LE26R41B LCD component borders question

Ok, I've just got the above LCD, and overall I'm pretty pleased with it so far. One question though - the user manual makes a point on the first two pages of potential problems that can be caused by borders on sides / top + bottom of the screen. Now, when I play my PS2 through component (be it 50hz, 60hz or progressive) I'm greeted by small borders on the sides of the screen, no matter if I've set the TV/Game/PS2 options to 16:9.

If I understand correctly its something to do with upscaling/downscaling? I can deal with this, as its hardly the end of the world - but I've also read of some cases of "image persistence"on LCD's. So my question is, are these borders going to pose a significant problem if they're displayed for lengthy amounts of time? I've been told image persistence is temporary, but I?d rather not take any chances.

How long would these borders have to be shown to start causing problems? How long could I safely play for without risking persistence?

I'm pretty much an RPG gamer myself, so I'd be playing for pretty long periods of times each session.

This problem does not occur using RGB Scart connections - but the image quality is far off the component connections, so I'd rather not switch back.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

This isn't uncommon in games. CRT's have a certain amount of overscan, which games tend to bear in mind, leading to underscan on many games.

Most screens should have a way to change this in the service menu, though I don't know how to get to this on the Samsung. My overscan is set to 5%.

You're in no danger of any kind of image persistence. I've got the same set and mine has been on for days straight displaying an entirely static image. I don't think I've ever read of anyone encountering such a problem with a LCD HDTV.

I think the borders are down to the console rather than the TV, to be honest. If I recall, my PS2 had a large black "frame" round all games while the XBOX 360 had a tiny to non-existant frame - both running over component.

Ive got the equivilent Samsung 42" but Plasma, and its not the TV with the small borders, its the console's display regardless if you set it to 16:9.

If you had an Xbox and plugged that in,it fills the whole screen on 90% of games, like Out Run ect.

Don't forget on the Samsung newer TV's you can put the "white screen"on for an hour to get rid of any burn ect.

Thank god i found this thread.

I have my samsung lcd 26 tv and im runnin my PS2 throuigh component on it but i'm gettin borders on the left and right side of the screen.

Is there anyway to get rid of this? This sounds like what shaky jake was sayin, about goin into the service menu.

Anyone know how to get into the service menu on a Samsung LE26R74BDX? (I've googled and couldn't find anythin).

Don't go into the service menu and mess about with the settings. Even if you can stretch the image to fit the full screen, it'd only make it look worse while simultaneously ****ing up anything else you wanted to connect to your TV by stretching it off the screen.

It's not necessarily overscan. I think 1366x768 is 16:10 while most games support 16:9, meaning there are slight strips down the left and right of the screen (I get this on component).

^^^ i get it through component and RGB.

If this is meant to be normal and there's no solution then i guess i can live with that.

I did contact Samsung a little earlier and although they were very helpful, the couldn't help any further. I asked how to get into the service menu and they couldn't into that either.

I've got the LE32R41BD and the only time I've had borders (left and right) when gaming is playing some BC Xbox titles on the 360 through component.

With the power off press Info, Menu, Mute, then Power on the TV's remote control. I think you have to turn the TV off to exit the menu. Be careful in here! And if you select reset, it resets everything including the viewing time total.

Remember that hardly any PS2 games support widescreen, so if the borders are big that will be the reason.

Try it with a widescreen ame and see if it is the same.
