    HK customs

A friend of mine is currently in Hong Kong and has offered to bring a few PSP giga packs back with him since they are much cheaper there. The only thing that's worrying us is the customs, basically we need to know how much tax would he have to pay. Does anyone have experience with this? And would he have to pay customs in HK or on arrival here?

It's UK customs (or wherever you live) you'd have to worry about. You can bring back up to ?145 of new items to the UK from a holiday without having to pay any tax and according to yesterday's budget the limit is being increased to ?340. To be honest your highly unlikely to get taxed. You'd have to be unlucky to be checked - customs in the UK are incredibly lax. However if you were either unlucky or honest expect to pay import duty (it varies but on most electrical items it's between 5% and 20%) plus VAT (17.5%) on both the original price you paid plus the import duty.

Ok, thanks. I understand they expect you to declare the goods yourself, do you have to pay an additional fine if you don't declare and they check you?

If they do check you feign innocence.
