Dead PS2 laser?

Went to use my PS2 last night, and its not reading any disks, just continues to try to read the disk, doesnt matter if its a PS2 game on any type or even a music CD.

Its never had a disk read ever before, but is there anything else it could be other than the laser before i go and order one?

I had a PS2 that would load things, but far from every time - took up to 15 minutes to get anything to load.

I followed this guide:

to clean it and adjust the laser and now it works 95% of the time. It sounds worrying if yours won't read anything ever, but it might be worth trying, it was actually dead easy (I didnt bother using compressed air).
