Word 2003 help needed - stupid gf

The gf has fooked Word up - everytime you press the space bar a dot appears where the space should be, every time you press return you get a symbol called "pilcrow" (is on symbols list in word and looks like backwards p followed by l), and every time you press tab an arrow comes up!!
What can I do to get rid of this problem? (not the gf!)

Look for the pilcrow symbol up top on the button bar (next to the magnify %). Click it. Problem solved

(that button is to enable visible punctuation of carriage returns, spaces, paragraphs etc)

Personally, I think that function's a Godsend, but that may just be me.

Yeah, I wouldn't dream of using word without it switched on
It's essential.
