    Super Mario Bros NES Classics

Just picked this up today, and upon checking, it appears to be noticeably slower than the NES version. Mario feels sluggish, and the music is a different pitch. Anyone have any ideas as to why? If anything, I'd expect it to be faster than the PAL NES version I've been playing recently.

I've had a good google around t'internet, and I can't find any other mention of this. Help!

Edit: Playing again, I'm not so sure about the game speed. Is it just the music that's slower?

I have noticed the Mario is a bit sluggish to control, especially in comparsion to some of the other versions.

Later releases of the PAL version of Super Mario Bros. (such as that in the dual cartridge with Duck Hunt) were "speed corrected". They just did a very poor job of it! Some music is too fast some music (like the end of level fanfare) is too slow. The Mario's running speed also seems slightly our of wack compared with the rest of the game to me.

The differences are very clear if you go straight from one version to the other. I've got the game on the Famicom and I find it a real struggle to complete, but I can practically get through the PAL NES version I grew up with with my eyes closed!

Thanks for that. I went back to Super Mario Bros Deluxe on the GBC to check, and the music was the same speed as the GBA version. Maybe the speed has been over-corrected on my NES cart, as the music is absolutely manic.

You think that's manic, you should try the "corrected" PAL version on a Famicom / US NES!!

Only a handful of NES games were ever speed adjusted for PAL-Land, Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't, for example, but I think 3 was. Just give a thought to all those poor people who play *all* their PAL NES games on an NTSC machine thinking that it's the only way to get them to run at the intended speed.
