    Windows hanging on start-up :(

Started about ten days ago (using XP), only have the one user set up, when XP gets to the Welcome blue screen it hangs for about 6 seconds and then the desktop takes about another 6 seconds to load wallpaper/icons.
    Becoming really annoying now.
Disabled are startup programs via Run/Msconfig, only one remaining is "NvCpl" which I guess I need ?
No big files on desktop or anything, tried removing the wallpaper and no difference, no spyware/viruses on the system and no virus checker running on start up either, can't think what's caused it.

Any idea's anyone ? (haven't checked out Marcus's XP tweaks thread in depth yet but will do later today)

    Thanks.

What happens if you boot to safe mode, does it still take this long? Are you in a network, or workgroup? If its networked, may be an incorrect setting for DNS - although that would usually cause windows to sit there for minutes not seconds generally..!

it's fine when started in safe-mode, it's not in a network but is connected to a router, though that isn't the problem as I get the same result even when not connected to the router/internet.
Just time for a format/re-install I guess, done defrag etc etc over last few days and nothing has helped.

      Ta.

Sounds like a driver problem then, or something starting up with windows - use MSCONFIG in the run box and disable everything from startup and reboot, then see if its the same. Try updating GFX driver also.

Have you run HijackThis and gone through that whole procedure?
          Always worth doing...

Then look through the results, search google for anything that looks kooky and if it turns out to be dodgy, delete it!

Or post it up here and I'll take a quick look. I'm no expert, but I've done it a couple of times.

I usally have that problem when I install ATI graphic drivers, which is why I went back to Nvidia as my card of choice. But maybe it could be the Nvidia drivers in your case, have you installed the latest Nvidia graphics or motherboard drivers recently? To be honest the latest motherboard drivers I installed killed XP and I had to roll back on them.

You can actually post hijackthis logs in their entirity to www.hijackthis.de and it'll give you a pretty detailed breakdown.

Most of the stuff you've mentioned so far points at your nVidia drivers. I doubt this would cause that level of problem though. Do you have alcohol 120% installed. Some people cured hangs by removing it, the virtual DVD/CD drives can take an age to initialise.

I have rolled back the Nvidia drivers and completely removed Alcohol 120%, it has helped, still a short hang but acceptable, will do until I do a complete re-install of XP.

                      Thanks for tips everyone.

Try reinstalling 120% and uninstalling again. That's what worked for me. Just uninstalling it after it had messed up didn't do the job completely.
