Animal Crossing - Should I get it?

Call me a heathen, but I couldn't see the appeal initialey of Animal Crossing, I never got into the Pokemon thing and thought it was the same sort of thing. But after readin Equip on the Gamecube today it seems more and more appealing.

Any advice on whether it's worth getting or not. Have I missed things in the game because of time passing since it's release (does it work like that?) and how important are these cards that are coming out. It all seems a little like Magic the GAthering kind of thing.

    great game however......

it is the kind of game that you play for an hour or two every day or two, if you don't play it regularly the animals get mad and your town becomes messy.

    it is a big commitment

so the more appropriate question may be do you have the time for it

Get it. You will be hooked for several months. Dont worry about the events as they are annual so you can still get them next year.

If you want to make the game keeps it appeal and last longer do only play it in small bursts.

I found it to be very tedious and boring to be honest. Thats more a reflection of my taste in games at the moment though. If you like slow, quirky nintendo games, by all means go for it.

          Get it!
Alongside Rez, Orta and Ico this game is what gaming should be about.
It is the most engrossing game I have ever played and I love it to bits.
I found myself playing it for about an hour a day (much longer and it loses some magic) and loving every second. It really does have a magical quality that no other cube game has at this moment.
The e-cards are not an essential part of the game but I have bought them because I am such a huge AC fan. All they do is give items that can be collected anyway.

Thanks for the replies, at the mo I get about 1 hour a day for gaming (studying web design) so if I can have like 1/2 hour a day that could work out fine, the rest is with the sublime Ikaruga.

My wife doesn't really play anything else, to be honest. I'd recommend it; its really nice relaxing fun. The minimum effort if you're not getting much time is only like a quarter of an hour or so every couple of days to weed and say hi to everyone; its not as bad as you might think.
