Does this have a battery-backed cart, or is a memory card required like the original version?

I'm pretty sure the original didn't need a memory card, the PAL version didn't anyway because I never owned a memory card until about 6months into the N64's life and i'd already played WR64 to death by then without the need for one. You could store ghosts on them I think but general saving/record keeping was on the cart.

Wave Race can save on the cart's eeprom and can also use the controller pack as an alternate save method.
