Why Can't I Copy This CD?

I just bought 'drukqs' by Aphex Twin and I can't copy it to my HDD. Infact, I can't even play it in my CD-RW or my DVDRom drive. When I put it in, either when I select the drive from my PC it just stays black, or the light flickers indefinitely on the front of my drive.

I've got a Mitsumi CR-48XETE and it's rather annoying becuase I never really use my CD player anymore...

    So... any ideas?

Wasn't there a copy protection scheme implemented a while back that prevented the CD being played in drives such as PC CD and in car CD players.

    Could be that.

Hey Nips, I think I read somewhere a while ago that the record companies were starting to put restrictions on CDs that meant that they couldn't be played on CD ROM drives in order to stop piracy.

Its a bit shizer for people with legitimate intentions really.

Aye the new radiohead cd seems a bit of a bastard. Plays on playstation and on pc (through its own player software). Plays 1st half of 1st track then just skips through all tracks to the end on the DC and on xbox it kept making scratchy type noises.

This was released in 2001 under Warp Records, so it isn't exactly new.

I suppose it's funny, I've had no problems with 'Hail to the Thief' I've listened to my copy on the HDD using media player a lot!

It sucks that they won't let some people play CDs using a CD-Rom drive... They should keep the method used by Media Player and put make everysong specific to the PC it was copied from, so that the MP3/WMA file can't be transferred through P2P.

Something like that would be good. God Sarnit!

Just slap a bit of masking tape on the TOC (the outer edge). Its just a normal CD with a corrupt table of contents, so some PCs and ROM based players go haywire as its not exactly redbook standard.

Fuerio or Nero will read it.

Also if the disc as the CD Compact Disc logo on it. Take the disc back and get your money back, as these protection systems are
not part of the "CD Audio" standard, and the disc would have been
sold to you on false pretenses.

                  Regards,
                  Neil.

Yeah - and that worked a treat didn't it

Often these CDs have their own player on them so they'll still work in a PC drive.

"Media Player and put make everysong specific to the PC it was copied from, so that the MP3/WMA file can't be transferred through P2P."

This is a default option, it can be turned off in the "Copy Music" options of media player.

                    Regards
                    Marty

Aye, bang on. And in reading it via. Nero, you can then burn it back to disc where by Nero will construct a proper TOC that will play in any CD-Audio compatible device...

                      Hurrah!

(then, follow up on Neil's other post and get your money back)

You got the limited edition version?

Seems people I've spoken to can play it okay on a PC (it's MacroAudioed btw), but anything over that, not really gonna happen. Which is strange considering that the US and European versions have no copy protection on them, just the UK and Canadian ones...

Thanks, I'll try to copy it with Nero, and then put the copy on my HDD... Sounds rather annoying with everyother CD though :S

About the CD sign. On the Disc it has the words: "Compact Disc DIGITAL AUDIO" The words are together like a logo type doodle!

                            Like this:

But in Black. Is that the one you were refering to? If so, and without a receipt, what would you suggest?

Think its just the normal edition from play. Looked on my dads copy and his says on the back UK then some number, mines just UK.

It plays fine through its own player on pc, but i prefer playing it through a console as then it goes through my receiver and is much better quality.
