    a few japanese saturn questions

hello, ive just bought an import saturn and have a few questions regarding it

is it possible to change the language on the menu so that it's in english as opposed to japanese

also, is it possible to run backup games on the machine, i have a few games that i copied to disk when i used to have an english console. would one of those action replay cards be sufficient? and would that also allow me to run US and PAL games?

    thanks in advance,
    bren

Yes you can change the Menu Language to English, Turn on the saturn holding your L and R Buttons, that'l take you directly to the menu, it's either the first or second setting, then you need to choose the english setting from that menu. (Just keep clicking them all until it goes english lol)

As for backups nope the action replay won't do it, you need a seperate Modchip but saying that depending on the internals of the saturn there's no guarenteeing it will work.

Yep it will - some of them also include built in ram so you can use it with Metal Slug & the Capcom fighters etc. that require extra memory.

I only ever used mine to play US Nights on my Jap Saturn so can't really say if all PAL/ US games are 100% compatible though.

Edit: I don't know how difficult it is to mod a Saturn but there is a guy over on rllmuk (username consolepassion ) that offers a modding service if you need someone to do it (prices incl. delivery):

        Sega Saturn
        --------------

        Add a 50/60Hz switch. ?20

        Add a Jap/UK/US Switch. ?30

Both of the above mods together. ?45

I can vouch for consolepassion, he's a genuine guy, he sorted me a MD RGB Stereo scart lead out for peanuts!..

as for finding out which Saturn you have, look for the code which begins HST-????, my Jp white saturn is HST-0014 not sure which generation that is, but someone else will tell you that.

That's the same card I use to run PAL/US games on my JPN white Saturn, if you can wait a week for delivery playasia do it quite a bit cheaper

Also for compatibility of PAL/US games on a JPN Saturn I find this site quite helpful

cheers Usquan thats a handy website to know..

deded if you have a look around on ebay you'll find those cards a lot cheaper, widen your search on evil bay to USA and Japan, I spotted a few yesterday but as i'm only interested in jap games I never bothered with one.

Remember to bookmark it! Can't remember how I found it but I didn't mark it the first time and it took me an age to track it down again.

If you've got one of the older Saturns it is actually possible to play back-ups without a modchip. I've not tried it personally but apparently it involves lots of disc swapping.

i used to do the disc swapping when i was younger, back when i wouldnt dare play some of my originals and used back ups so i didnt scratch the originals, dont ask!

Anyways, yes you can disc swap on the old grey models,i jus opened the cd lid and lodged in somthing in the hole with the switch, then pulled an original disc out as it accessed the copyright code............... in fact i shouldnt be telling this, so yes it does work and i did it ages ago. I knackers your cd drive though. So dont do it!
