    ISP question - unmetered ADSL?

Right, well, i'm moving in the next couple of weeks. I'm currently with Zen
Internet, who, if it was possible, i'd have their children, since their service has been awesome for the 5 years I have been a customer.

However, they have recently implemented 8 meg only solutions, and thus, cap the downloads on those connections. I'm still on a 2meg uncapped, but I fear when I move, they'll force me to move to the 8meg capped. Heartless.

So basically, i'm wondering if anyone knows of a decent ISP who will offer me an ADSL line with no caps. I'm quite happy to stick to 2 meg (more likely to find uncapped at that speed i guess), but I won't say no to unlimited 8 meg. Also it'd be nice if speeds weren't ever limited - i've heard some ISP's do this at peak times.

Bulldog are the only company that spring to mind, but i've heard lots of horror stories.

    Cheers in advance!

I'm with UKOnline, 8 Meg Download, 756k Upload and can't recommend them enough.

    It's
    ?24.99 for 8 Meg Unmetered
    ?14.99 for 2 Meg Unmetered
    ?9.99 for 1 Meg Unmetered

Or if u fancy being a fancy pants you can get ADSL 2 from them for ?29.99

        Cheers fella!

Been looking all over, but there are so many friggin choices! Not heard of UK online before, but, as I say, there are so many they probably just got lost in the sea of ISP's!

Nah, the area i'm moving too is cable-less. :S

Plus, 75gb is sadly, not enough for me!

Which is why its gonna be hard to find an ISP - Even the unmetered ones say in their Fair Use Policy, "well, its not ACTUALLY unlimited, if we think you are whoring the line, then we'll stop the service". Not really unlimited then is it!! Bah!

            From http://www.zenadsl.co.uk/athome.aspx?page=510

Will existing customers be forced to move onto the new services?

No. Existing customers can stay on their current unlimited Broadband service should they so wish. Even if they move premises, they can continue to stay with the same account.

            So you should be fine.

/me slaps the dude on the phone who said he'd have to switch.

Right, Zen it is then. Who needs people on the phone when you have the intrawet!

Sort of related to this thread: BT recently sent out an email saying they're upgrading to 8mb, but you have to register. When you look at the registration page, in the small print it says you're then signing up to a new minimum 12 month contract, changing your current T&Cs. The same 40 GB cap applies, so it's pointless anyway given you can use that in under 48 hours on 2mb.

The point of the story is: make sure you read the small print carefully.

I am with Ukonline too and although there is no cap there is a fair use policy, so beware!

pipex do a 2meg unmetered for ?25 plus you'll be upgraded to 8meg soon. however they do cap bittorrent dl speeds, but this can easily be circumvented.

I'm with Zen, have the 512k unmetered service, and recently moved house, keeping the same service. Zen were really good throughout the move, but due to a problem with BT Wholesale I was off broadband for 17 days

You can theoretically make a simultaneous transfer of your landline and broadband, but you must order the transfer more than 5 working days ahead of the move date. It doesn't matter if you go to BT or Zen first, one way or the other you will be given a code to pass on to the other so that they can tie their transactions together to make it all happen together.

In my case, the BT Wholesale move platform got stuck at one point in the workflow, and it took days to get them to manually manipulate the data in my account to make the process proceed to the finish. After the change the broadband came on within minutes!

I was told the simultaneous move does work smoothly in about 70% of cases. I suspect my particular problem was that I originally set up the transfer for exactly 5 days time, then couldn't get through to Zen (Customer Support don't work evenings) and it was 4 days to move by the next morning. So I cancelled my move with BT, then set up another 2 days further into the future, and continued the process. I believe this caused a data condition that the system choked on.

So yeah, keep things simple and give them more than 5 working days notice of your move, and you should be back on your 2mb unmetered Zen service with all smoothness

Yeah, i tried to set up a simultaneous move - but cos my line is with carphone warehouse or something (to get rid of an annoying asshole of a salesman, and me being too lazy to cancel it) I have to become a BT customer again, which takes 2 week. Then I can move the ADSL over.

Ah well, as long as I keep my 2 meg unlimited ADSL, i'm not too fussed!

Cheers for all the input dudes!
