Xbox 360 - sounds quieter in 720p mode - WHY?

I recently changed the setting on my Xbox 360 so that it displayed in 720p instead of 480.

The trouble is that the some of the sound seems quieter, almost muffled.

This only happens with certain sound effects, such as voices (on Kameo) and gun firing (on COD2)

Does anyone have a reason why, or have a solution to stop it?

How are you getting sound? Just through the audio leads on the component cable or through optical?

Just through the audio leads yeah. (plugged in all six leads with the cable that came with the 360)
