Problem updating PSP firmware

My PSP has sat on 1.5 for a while now and I decided to update the firmware. I have tried 2.6 (via a game) and 2.7 DLed for the net but when I go to update all the messages are invisible!!

Do I have to go from 1.5 to 2.0 first? If not what can I do to sort this out?

You need reset the factory settings through Settings > Restore Default Settings to get the text displayed when updating the firmware.
