    Samsung HD 32 " CRT

    Hi,

Thinking about getting this for use with my 360

    http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/453_324140.html

Anyone got one or have any comments before I splash the cash

I haven't got one but quite tempted if my old crt packs in & it certainly seems a good deal for the price.

Anyway, There are some impressions on this set (& it's variants) over on av forums:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331180

The thread started a while ago (probably way before anyone had the set) so probably best to start with the newest posts & work your way back.

seems a bit pricey imo considering you can pick up the lcd version for only a few hundred more, and it would take up way less space

Yeah but it's hdtv ready & some people prefer crt's to lcd's. Better black levels, no smearing/ blurring etc. I'd guess it won't suffer from the problems some lcd's have when you run stuff at anything other than the native resolution.

Size is obviously an issue but I think this model is meant to be a bit slimmer than most standard crt sets too.

I was tempted to pick this up myself last week but after reading up on a number of reviews from people that have bought the set i decided not to.

Apparently they all suffer from quite bad geomatary issues and are quite noisy!

I'l wait until they get the technology sorted before handing out my hard cash

tom-nook thanks for the link and I would prefer a HD CRT for the reasons you mention.

Popped into Currys on the way home and they are doing the same set with built in freeview and a stand for ?499. Picture looked great and it is a lot slimmer than my current JVC 28" widescreen. Had a good listen for any buzzing but the one in the shop was very quiet.

Think its going to be a buy and I will post back when I have it setup

take something that'll output 720p with your first... it seems it can look nice on sd stuff but slam a 720p signal into it and your picture just isn't straight. i'd dearly love one but after taking a look first hand i'm not convinced (yet).

Can this actually display a 720p picture at the proper resolution, or can it just accept a 720p signal which it then downscales?

Cheers, just wondering as I thought that to get the "HD Ready" badge you had to have a DVI or HDMI socket as well, which this doesn't have according to the Comet web site.

I think I'll have to find my nearest Comet and see if they have any of these, love to see what it looks like. I always find it a little bit of a struggle to get the contrast / brightness levels exactly right on my LCD TV, so I'd like to see if this could do a better job in those areas.

there's actually no information about this tv on samsung's uk site (nice one you idiots!). the us site has 2 hd crts and it says one has 2 hdmi and 2 component and the other just has 2 component.

hmm, will definately call in again and check the set out...

The set doesn't display a 720p image, it scales it to 1080i.

Just did a quick google and found a link to another shop selling this. Except that it's not quite the same. The model number is the same as on the Comet web site but has an extra X on the end.

This one has (supposedly) has a native resolution of 1080i and does have an HDMI socket, but no component input. The details on the page also don't list 720p as one of the accepted resolutions.

seems there's 2 very different models.... top one has the component only, bottom one the hdmi.

I think I'll ask for some detailed specs when I pop in to Comet. Shops like that are always full of really knowledgeable staff that know what they're talking about
