    Quick 360 VGA question

I have my 360 hooked up to my plasma via the official VGA cable and set the correct resolution on the dash.

However,on Play's site they say that

Video output settings of 480p, 720p, or 1080i are possible for the cable.I cant find any info on this anywhere. Is it only on DVD playback or am I missing somehting really obvious?

You don't get anything above 1280x1024, and VGA can only be progressive, so no 1080i. 720p is 1280x720, and I believe you get 480p options as well.

Nothing is specified as video resolutions with the VGA cable though, only computer ones. It's recommended that you leave it in 1280x720 and let your display scale to fit, as some games try to render in a higher resolution and suffer from performance drops.

Thats the resolution I am using at the moment and everything looks fine.

I just got confused over why Play were describing it as having variable resolutions.

So does that mean that the component cable can actually output at a better res, seeing as it can do 1080i?

1080i is just 720p being scaled up; for the most-part, the 360 renders everything at 1280x720 internally and the output is just scaled.

That is simply a misprint. For some reason all they have done is just copy all the details from the normal HDTV component cable 'Item description' and put it in the VGA.

I saw this and laughed when I bought my VGA lead from them.

1080i is extreamly over-rated and I have not and will never use it, I personally think that it looks horrible as I can see the Interlace lines.

Also the truth be told, the Xbox 360 can't actually render 1080i. Similar to what andrewfee said it is being scaled.

However I believe that it is actually running at 960x540p and splitting it into an interlaced picture, 960x540p*2=1920x1080i.

This is evident due to the lack of any resolution above 1360x768 within the 360 dash when using the VGA cable. 1920x1080 is a VGA supported resolution, so why wouldn't it be available?

It would be a much simpler task to split a 960x540p in half and apply filters than it would be to upscale 1280x720p as that would require a lot of unessary calculation which would eat the processor and memory.
