Official Sony Scart reverting to Composite

Got a wierd issue with the official Sony PS2 Scart cable, where if I just plug it directly into my screen (LG 26LX2R) it will only display in Composite. However, I have an old Scart Switcher from Argos which has a button to turn RGB on/off... and using this makes the RGB work.

The screen works fine in RGB for other devices, and fine on this cable when using the switcher... but I'd like to ditch the switcher.

Can anyone tell me what's up and how to fix it? As while I would not be suprised if this happened to a third party cable, this is the official Sony one...

I can confirm this exact behaviour, but I don't know how to solve it. It's strange, the Blaze one works.

None of the third party cables I have lying around here do this either. But there is a definate noticable quality difference when using the official one. Didn;t know if there was a pin I had to mess with (like some cables need to stop them forcing 16:9).

It's annoying, because the Argos switcher adds noticable vertical-running lines on edges. I could use a better Scart switcher, but I think that's actually solving the problem...

Having not checked pinouts etc, my guess here would be that the Sony lead is wired up for both Composite and RGB, and that your television, for some bizarre reason, uses composite in preference to RGB. Presumably the Blaze lead is only wired up for RGB, and the Argos switcher filters it out.

EDIT: From looking here, my guess would be that cutting pin 19 would solve the problem.

It's strange though because I don't get the problem with any other cable.
No doubt it's something between the screen and the cable, since IIRC amornod has the same screen as me (maybe 32" ver.?).

Half tempted to just open uo the cable and snip the wires that do Composite, but given how expensive the official cables are, I'm reluctant.

It's the only way you'll stop it.
            Kept you waiting, huh?

The method amdrewfree posted looks simple enough. I just snip that wire and I loose nothing except Composite output? Cool.

You can't cut the composite line in an RGB lead as the composite signal is used for the sync for the RGB signal.

Sorry, was in a hurry before so I couldn't post much.

My guess is that the problem is with pin 16, which is what tells the TV whether to use RGB or composite. When you use the Argos switchbox, I'm guessing you have other RGB devices plugged in at the same time? These boxes don't seem to correctly switch the RGB and widescreen select signals from the connected devices, so you can get situations where you'll get a different display depending on what else is hooked up.

As a first check, I'd open up the SCART plug on the lead and just make sure pin 16 is connected up.
