Music files not appearing on PSP menu

Did a search but nobody seems to have had or discussed this particular problem.

First things first - I have a Sony MP3 player and therefore I have the SonicStage software. When I use SonicStage to transfer my ripped CDs, it works. It creates a folder within the root directory of the PSP called 'OMGAUDIO' - this folder contains a lot of .DAT files and a subfolder, the subfolder contains *all* the .OMA music files (renamed in hex or something).

When I look at this on the PSP they all appear nicely divided by group, album etc so I presume all this title data is held in the .DAT files (they are not ASCII files unfortunately).

If I just copy the correctly titled .OMA files from my PC to the root of the PSP, they don't appear in the music menu. If I copy them into the OMGAUDIO folder created by SonicStage they still don't appear. I created a subfolder called Music and copied them there, still nothing.

This isn't ideal because I want to be able to copy my music files from external storage without the use of a PC as a middle man. I've got the device to do this (Apacer Steno) but I can't run SonicStage on it obviously.

I'm pretty sure I must be the only person in the world trying to use ATRAC encoding for my music, but it seems odd that it can only read ATRAC music if it was put there by SonicStage.

What is the process for mp3s?

MP3's just simply drag into the Music folder and away you go, simple-as, I've not been flash and tried to create any sub-folders or anything

What Music folder though? I looked around and there wasn't one, does it have to take a funny name the same way as for video files? The one I created in the PSP root didn't work.

No funny names, just create a MUSIC folder in the PSP one.

Apologies if I sound like an idiot for suggesting the obvious, but perhaps you should reformat the Memory Stick on the PSP (Don't forget to back-up any saved game data onto your PC first!).

The MUSIC folder will be located in the PSP folder in the Memory Stick Root(along with everything else). This is where you place the files. If music files don't show up on your PSP after this, I'll be damned. I assume you're using MP3/MP4 (AAC?)/ATRAC3 music files?

It sounds like that's it, I'm sure I formatted the memory stick on the PSP originally.. it has a 100MNV01 folder and a PSP folder, but there's nothing inside the PSP folder at all (no sub folders etc).

So I'll probably need to either create the MUSIC directory or reformat...

I'm not sure that a reformat would create all folders. Easier to manually create them

              PSP\MUSIC (sound files)
              PSP\PHOTO (pics)
              PSP\UPDATE (firmware update)
PSP\COMMON (files downloaded via browser, automatically created by the 1st download)
              PSP\SAVEDATA (automatically created)
PSP\GAME (demos like Locoroco, homebrew if possible)
              MP_ROOT\100MNV01 (videos)

OK, after some tests - if I create the MUSIC folder and put MP3s in it, I can see them and play them.

If I put ATRAC3 files in it (the same ones that are in the OMGAUDIO folder created by SonicStage) they still cannot be seen.

So I guess the PSP can't play ATRAC3 unless it's been transferred by SonicStage? That's bollocks!!

Found the apparent explanation on the net:

ATRAC3 uses DRM so u cant drag and drop like a mp3 file

I have a Sony cd player in my car, mp3 & atrac compatible, but never tried atrac. Mental note for me: Do not bother.

It's a pain in the arse, I encoded everything using it because you get the same quality at half the size.

It's no use to me if I can't just move the files as I want them though, so I'll just have to re-do everything as MP3.
