XP Home Log In/Log Out Problem

    Hi,

Installed Diskeeper the other day and since then I've had a wierd problem with an XP Home machine.

Boot Up -> User A logs in -> Activity -> User A logs out -> Any other user can't login.

It prompts for a password, even on accounts that aren't password protected. The only (obvious) work around is to reset the machine. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Can you yse system restore to go back to before you installed DK?

When you say it prompts for a PW, do you mean XP itself, or diskeeper?

Could be youve set up some sort of automatic or scheduled scan and its wanting to access areas of the disk it hasnt the rights to, so wants a PW to enable it to.

Just guessing as I dont really use DK, but the first thing Id do is remove DK (if I cant see any obvious setting to change) and see if the problem goes away.

      Hi Marcus,

I removed Diskeeper and cleaned the machine up a bit (it was XP Pro btw). This has initially appeared to solve the issue, but I am still cautious (you have to be with Windows don't you). I still don't really understand exactly how or why the problem was caused......but maybe ignorance is bliss! There was an MS KB article on an error ID I found in the Event Viewer which referred to the problem I experienced, but in a different context (something to do with Smart Cards). Anyway.....doesn't matter now (hopefully).

Thank-you for your help though, and for also suggesting System Restore, because despite System Restore being enabled, it hasn't been creating automatic restore points (useless!) so I'm going to take a look at that now too.

      Ciao!
