PS2 & USB modem

My mate has an old style PS2 but is with Wanadoo. If he buys a network adaptor is the a plug that converts USB to ethernet? I have one that converts ethernet to USB that I use on my laptop, but wasn't sure if there was one for the opposite. Also, would that affect him connecting his PS2 online?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work because a USB modem will require drivers that the PS2 won't have. He'd need to get an ethernet modem or router.
