What are Nintendo VIP stars used for?

I've never actually done anything with mine and I've got quite a few here from my DS buying over the last while. Are they worth using, can you get anything decent in return or are they just a gimmick?

tbh mostly gimmicks like wallpapers

the UK system isnt even a scratch on the Japanese hot mario coupons

but there has been a couple of nice stuff on the nintendouk website

the best being a preorder system where you got a DS before it was available in the shops shipped to your door with a game and a demo, you had to use points and RRP to get it, but you got it early

Earlier than when most people imported the US version for less money?

I got Metroid Zero Mission from the VIP thingy for nothing except accumulated Live points which was a decent deal but stuff like that goes quick. Mostly it is just wallpapers and pictures that are hardly worth it.
