Have I read somewhere that online DS friend codes can be transferred? If I wanted to transfer settings from a DS to a Lite would I be able to? Otherwise I understand that I'd be looking having to use different FCs?

Yeah, you can do it. You need to go into the online options (where it shows the DS MAC address) and then it'll have the option to transfer the settings. Then on the DS that's receiving them you just go to DS Download Play on the main system menu as if you were playing single cart multiplayer and it'll find it as if it was a downloadable game.
There are full instructions in the Nintendo Wi-Fi pamphlet that comes with online-enabled games if I remember correctly.
