    Intel Core 2 Duo/Extreme

Have any PC makers introduced Conroe based systems yet? I noticed that the chips are available on Overclockers. I was suprised Dell haven't got them yet, I would have thought they would be first. I'm too lazy to build a system myself so I'd like to see who will be the best supplier.

they are not out just yet, 21st iirc so i would say give it a couple of weeks before they are in pre built PC's

Yes, they were launched, but are not available in retail yet. OcUK page says they'll arrive on the 24th.

Not strictly OT, but my Conroe Extreme X6800 preorder from OC has been dispatched.
I reckon OC will do some Conroe-based full systems soon.

A ?780 X6800?! Why pay a ridiculous premium over the other Conroe CPUs?

Indeed, the E6700 is nearly half the price and has most of the performance according to reviews.

Do you need a complete new mobo for an Intel Core 2 chip? I'm sure I read that it works on a standard 775 mobo of which I've got...
Maybe I can replace my bog standard ageing P4 3ghz with an Intel Core 2 chip?

It'll fit but it probably won't work. The Core2's are only compatible with the 975x and 965express boards if I'm right.
I plan on getting the 6700 cpu. As for mobo, god knows, the only one I fancy is the MSI 975x Powerful Platinum Upgrade edition but as of yet I can't find one.
Hell, I'd buy it for the name alone!

The nForce590 is out for Intel in August, that's when the good mobo's will start appearing.

                    I'm eyeing this one http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?p=1929911
                    A new mobo with a decent amount of PCI's - a rarity.

I'm stuck on what new CPU to buy for my new PC i'm building next month hopefully.

AMD have just released there new Socket AM2 CPU's so you can get an X2 5000+ AM2 for ?230 or for the same price-ish (?250) you can get the new Intel Core 2 Duo E6600.

Are the new Intel's generaly well better than the AMD's?

Yeah, the Core 2 Duo are something special. Intel all the way.

The current crop of AM2 processors are just the existing X2 processors on a new socket w/ DDR2 support. They don't compare to Conroe, especially with lower-spec Conroes being at comparable prices and better performance.

Not expecting AMD to tolerate being second for long though! But as I'm building a machine right now, I went for the Core2Extreme.

Yeh they are just the same but they're ALOT cheaper! 5000+ AM2 socket is ?230, 5000+ on a 939 socket is alot, cant find a price but the 4800+ on 393 is ?430 so its a major price drop! But when comparing the E6600 to the AM2 5000+, you'd say the E6600 is the way to go for definitely?

Better off asking the folks over at Overclockers.co.uk, they already have their E6600's (that's where I got my X6800) so they can tell you first hand.
People are creaming all over them though, so I gather they are the better CPU.

Socket 939 processors are becoming more expensive because they're not manufactured anymore. Bit like how an XP3200+ is more expensive than a A64 CPU and mobo.
