    Nintendo DS Wi-Fi on airplanes

    Hello,

I'm off on holiday soon and was wondering if I could use the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection to another DS safely onboard a plane?

    Cheers

If you use this you will assume control of the plane and have to land it yourself. Not a good idea!

If I was going to design a plane or hospital equipment I would make damn sure mobile phones, etc couldn't defeat them!!

It depends on the company your travelling with but most will not let you use anything that transmits a signal.

On the bright side if you turn wifi off you'll get more mileage out of your ds so it wont run out before your plane journey finishes.

I'm off on holiday tomorrow and am taking mine with me. I presume if you're playing a single-player game, you don't have to disable Wifi somehow ? i.e. it only comes on if you tell it to ? Will be playing Phoenix Wright, NSMB, Castlevania ...

While traveling with SAS I think it was last year, you where able to use a laptop with wifi to connect to the internet on the flight. I didn't have my laptop with me to try it, just found a leaflet in the seat pocket.

True, but I'm going with a mate of mine and our respective halfs to Thailand i.e. long flight, so it would be ace play Tetris, Mario Karts etc...

Your best bet is just to ask when you check in with the airline. Im sure they will tell you if you can or not

Modern plane/hospital equipment isn't affected by phones or wi-fi and is insulated from it for security reasons. They just tell you not to for insurance reasons so that if something did go wrong people can't accuse them of being negligent.

Still, even that's changing. A lot of flights now offer wi-fi Internet access (at exorbitant prices, of course) and the news that they're thinking of enabling mobile phone calls from planes brings tears to my eyes. The one saving grace of long haul flights is that they're a respite from people talking on their bloody phones.

Personally when I went to Japan me and my friend who was sat on the other side of the plane spent a lot of the time playing Virtua Tennis over wi-fi. The plane didn't crash once.

Mythbusters (US tv show for those that don't know) did an episode on the "does my phone mess with the planes instruments"..

They got interference while using a GSM signal generator running at something like 50x the power output of a normal phone. This was in some test rig they had built with oldish equipment.

They then tried it in a real plane, and couldnt get any interference whatsover, no matter what power output they used.

As NekoFever says, its just to cover their own asses incase something does happen - and i've never heard of anything of this type happening - and if it had, airlines would be a little more careful about it, rather than saying "please dont use a phone" they'd confiscate them to make sure you didnt

But yeah, with all the signals and **** that are flying about the sky, i dont think 2 dudes playing tetris are gonna cause too much havoc!

I'll risk it guys! We can't live forever! ;-)

I read that they have put WiFi access in Boeing planes and charged the earth.

This to me would seem obvious, it's a right con in hospitals making phone calls, I had a overnight stay in addenbrooke's this year for a op and to make phone calls using their system was about 50p a minute - no ferking wonder they ban mobiles (even if on silent)!

The are really annoying on planes about mobile phones and such, I was using my w810i in walkman mode which disables all phone functions. A hostess came and had a go at me and said that it shouldn't be on, when I said it was in flight mode she still ignored me.

I can guarentee you that there are like 30 business men with Ipaqs and smartphones which they probably don't even know how to switch into flight mode on every flight. You can't physically switch them off.

Last time I was in hospital the prick opposite had a mobile, he was virtually deaf so had it full volume and had to shout into it. It went off most of the night, he very nearly had it shoved up his tubes.

Ban them completely in hospitals, if people need to see you then at least they have to bring grapes or something.

In certain parts of the hospital you cant even use them if you want as they have mobile jammers installed. I remember forgetting once & firing up my mobile in A&E and the signal was cut off.
