    Wireless Router & Blueyonder Problem

Ok, i've been trying to setup my wireless router, not having much luck though. It's a Netgear WGR614 (pictured below). I currently have a USB Motorola SB5100 (also pictured below) which i use to connect to the internet. I've tried connecting a cable from the USB modem to the wireless router and one going from the PC to the router, it all lights up but nothing seems to happen. I can't seem to connect to the router settings and it doesn't appear in My Network Places. It's also setup to recieve IP address automatically via DHCP.

    you want:

straight through network cable from pc to router (any of the 4 ports will do, this cable will be in the box, generally blue in colour :P)

you then want another straight through cable from sb5100 to the WAN port on the router, this will be a normal RJ45 network port but will be seperate from the other 4... (NOTE, NO USB Connections, its all done using Network cables)

now... power on the cable modem till its online, then power on the router....

now, first check you are getting an ip from the router by typing in command prompt (start - run - type command, ok) type ipconfig /all

your ip should be 192.168.x.x (also in this take note of the default gatway ip, this is the ip of the router)

if its been set by APIPA (169.254.X.X) type ipconfig /release, press enter, then ipconfig /renew, enter... then check again with ipconfig /all

if thats correct, goto internet explorer and type 192.168.x.1 (this will be the address that was next to default gateway, it also says in your manual!)

press enter, you will be greeted with a username/password box, this is to enter the http based config for your router... user will be admin, pass will either be blank, admin or "password"

once in here you can set up various settings... see the manual for what they do

tbh if youve got this far your net should be working... NOW, they are supposed to auto update the MAC list for your account, (ie your cable modem MAC will be registered under your account) but it doesnt always work, you can ring them up and give them the mac of your router and they will add it for you OR you can CLONE the MAC address of the cable modem with the router, so they just send data through to that registered MAC... chances are if its not working by now its because of this, look for CLONE mac in router config...click clone, it should then have the same mac as your cable modem and your away

post back with how you get on

Excellent stuff chief, you've just saved me placing a brick through my pc. All up and running now . Didn't realise you wouldn't need to use the USB cable as well. Many thanks.

Come to think of it there is one other thing . Is it possible to use my DS with this network? I recieved the message "The access point's security settings are not supported by the Nintendo DS" Anyway of getting around that? Those Nintendo USB dongles seem a tad to expensive at the mo. Thanks.

            hello again

i believe the ds only works with v1 of the WGR614 netgear router

also you've either gotta disable your wireless encryption entirely, or change it WEP and use key number #1 only

theres loads of help on the follwing website, incluing all error messages, compatability etc etc
