Just got my very first GBA game, Tales of Phantasia, and I'm playing it on my DS lite. However I'm noticing that it doesn't use the entire screen, it's sort of letterboxed with black borders all around it. Is this normal, are all GBA games like this on the DS? Can I stretch it somehow? Itried using both the top and the bottom screen already. I'm using a PAL DS with a US game btw, don't know if that matters.

It's normal. The GBA screen is 16:9 and the DS screens are both 4:3 which explains the larger borders on the top and bottom, and in actual fact the resolutions are fairly similar (256x192 vs 240x160) so they probably do just display them 1:1 to prevent any issues with picture quality from scaling.

Disappointing?
Seriously. Have you played a GBC game stretched on a GBA? It's ugly as sin. When the resolutions are so similar, 1:1 ratio is a must. Stretched modes always end up with horrid pixel doubling only on certain rows and columns. It's ugly. You'll be complaining that the screen's not clear enough next
Oh, by the way, if you hadn't already worked it out, it's preferable to display GBA games on the top screen as the touch screen's overlay makes for a slightly darker tint to everything and treats outside light such as that crappy English cloudy grey sky colour differently.
