Best wireless pad for the original X-Box?

Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering whats the best wireless pad for the original X-Box? I would like it to be as close as possible to the official controller-S.

In fact, I was wondering - is there any way to use an official X-Box 360 wireless pad on the original X-Box?

...eg. If I buy a third party wireless pad and used its dongle in the X-Box would this be able to connect to the official wireless 360 pad, or would this not work? (I am under the impression that almost all wireless pads so far use the 2.4Ghz frequency range, or am I wrong?)

Just because they use 2.4GHz doesn't make them all compatible - if that were the case, you'd only ever be able to use one wireless pad at a time. I don't think there's an adapter available to use a 360 pad on the system, as it uses a proprietary Microsoft wireless technology, and third parties aren't allowed to make wireless pads for the 360. (so they won't know anything about it)

I don't know about being the best or not, but a few weeks back my Xbox pad died, and seeing as I barely use it now, I didn't want to pay ?20 for another official pad. I happened to spot a Logitech "Cordless Attack Controller" in Play-Asia's summer sale for ?10, and it seems pretty good.



I didn't realise it when I ordered, but there's no rumble, however a couple of AAs are supposed to last 300 hours! (if I remember correctly)

It's pretty similar in size and shape to the S pad, perhaps a bit smaller, but still big compared to the 360 one:



Normally I'd avoid 3rd party stuff at all costs, but this doesn't seem too bad. The buttons are good, and while a bit floaty, the d-pad seems better than the one on the 360 / S-Pads. Sticks are a little looser, but centre properly, and don't seem to have any deadzone issues.



The receiver has a short lead from the Xbox and goes to a box which can take two memory cards, and presumably a live headset too. (but you're not really wireless then)

If there's been no activity for a while (eg turning the system off) the pad will shut off, and you don't need to re-sync it with the system when you turn it back on, you just hit any button (apart from the sticks/triggers) and it'll turn itself back on and connect automatically.

I have the rumble version of the above, called the Logitech Cordless Precision. It's brilliant. Battery life is longer than my 360 controller.

Logitech seem to be good with this kind of thing, as their Cordless Action controller for the PS2 is just as great.

Yeah, Logitech are one of the few third parties who are worth a look for accessories. The Cordless Precision controllers were excellent.

Thanks everyone for your replies. So it seems everyone is in agreement that the Logitech wireless controllers are the best - makes my decision alot easier!

On a somewhat related note, can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two official wired Xbox 360 controllers - one says its for Xbox 360, and the other say for Xbox 360 & PC, but the Xbox 360 uses USB ports, so whats the difference between the two? I am planing to get a wired 360 controller to use as a PC controller for MAME etc (I thought it would also be useful as a 360 controller when I eventually buy the console)

(EDIT) Oh, one last thing, are there any Xbox-Dreamcast joypad convertors? - I just thought it would be great if I could use the Xbox wireless Logitech controller on my DC aswell

I believe the "PC" one comes with the drivers on a disc and in different packaging. The pad itself should be the same, and you should be able to download drivers from the Microsoft website.

They're apparently going to be releasing an adapter to let you use your wireless pads on your PC later this year, but it might be a pain having to resync them all the time between your console / PC.

The pad is definitely the same. Buy the cheaper one and get the drivers on the net.

Also, as a side thought, if I got a USB to Xbox controller port convertor (I think Microsoft issue them free as long as you pay for postage) do you reckon I might be able to use this wireless reciever to connect an official Xbox 360 controller to the original Xbox?

Not likely, it'll probably need drivers to control syncing the pad with the receiver.
