    You can also get this message when you've got dodgy / failing RAM installed.

    Before sending the HD back i'd suggest downloading the bootable version of Memtest86 and see what / if any errors pop up.

      If you can get your hands on a copy of search and recover (here: http://www.iolo.com/sr/4/) you can restore files from faulty hard discs by booting from CD, then saving the files to CD or DVD.

        If you are going to do an RMA, first go to the manufacturer' site and download their own diagnostic software. To accept a RMA they want you to try all tests, including a low level format if the SMART tests are OK and then communicate all error codes, if any.
