    PS2 Picture Problem

I have recently bought a v7 PS2 with Messiah 2 chip, It plays everything i throw at it, however, there is one small problem. When playing NTSC games (using an RGB Scart cable) the picture is squashed in the top two thirds of the screen, leaving the bottom third empty. Although the game is still perfectly playable, i just wondered if theres something I can to do make it full screen.

I don't think this is a problem with my TV as I know it supports NTSC as it does through my gamecube and dvd player.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a 'Picture Size' button on your TV remote?

If so, give that a press and it should sort itself out. I have a widescreen tv and it accepts NTSC but when I play imports, it does shift the picture until I resize it.

Give it a go. I could be massively wrong about your sitch though......

Yes, I'd agree with that. Both my Sony TVs switch to 14:9 mode when you power on a PS2, and I have to manually switch the screen mode back to "Wide" - irritating, I know - it's like ordering fries in McDonalds - if I wanted 16:9, I'd select 16:9...

Will look into what pin needs to be disconnected in the SCART shematic to stop this happening, as a few people have mentioned it.

      Regards,

      Will.

But you are selecting 16:9 mode, therefore like McDonalds what you ask is what you get.

Make sure on the PS2 configuration menu that you have 4:3 selected, as I believe the PS2 will outswitch the TV next time it's turned on.

Most SCART leads assume that 5V on Pin 8 will select AV mode, however the SCART standard was modified a while back so...

        0-3V - TV Mode (i.e Don't auto switch)
        5-8V - Widescreen mode
        9.5-12V - AV Mode
(Values between these are undefined and will generelly go to the nearest mode +/- 1V)

If Pin 8 is wired to or from pin 16 then it's a badly made lead and it's not getting enough juice to go into AV mode so it goes into Widescreen mode. You could cut the wire off pin 8 and select RGB manually or you could try another lead, pref offiicial Sony one.

Something similar happened to me with a Blaze RGB lead. It automatically switched the TV to 16:9 mode, and I prefer to play 4:3 games in 4:3 mode. It seems no biggie, but I can't select 4:3 on my TV. Normally Auto is 4:3, but with the PS2->Blaze it was 16:9.

Fortunatelly, an official Sony RGB lead solved it.
