Xbox scene should cover all your questions . Your best bet though is to get a Xbox utiliy disc ( Slayers disc for example ). It will format and install the correct partitions on large discs automatically for you.

I think about 400GB is the limit, if there is any limit at all, I've never seen bigger in an xbox , but i dont see why not.

as for compatibility, just get an IDE UDMA 133 250GB drive or similar, and you'll be fine. it uses cables rather than pre-set connector positions like the ps2 network adaptor so you'll be fine with pretty much any IDE hard disk, just like a PC.

what kinda soft mod is it though? depending on which one, you can't just whack another hard drive in there as it won't work.

if you've done the type where you flash the onboard bios then yeah you can just put a bigger one in then use slayers, etc, to get stuff onto it (or get a mate with an xbox and back your files up to his drive then copy them across afterwards)

however, if you've done a dashboard exploit or similar then you can't*, as the original bios is still booting up as normal and will look for a locked hard drive. if you had a daring mate with a chipped xbox, you could use configmagic to back up your eeprom, flash his with it so your machines become identical (make sure he backs his up first ), then he can lock the big hard drive on his and it'll then work on yours regardless of the mod you're using, once you've copied all the stuff across from your old one of course.

i recently swapped my 120gb for a 250gb one and it's been fine. i was gonna get 300 but the one i tried (seagate i think, can't remember) kept clicking cos the psu couldn't give it enough juice and i couldn't be bothered to shop around for different brands

            * having said that i've never really kept up with the soft mod scene so i dunno what they're up to nowadays, but i'm pretty confident that any sort of exploit will have the same issue, whereby the original microsoft bios is booted in the first place, then the exploit kicks in

ok then it won't have been flashed (afaik you have to open the machine and solder two points to allow the onboard chip to be flashed. it's write-protected under normal circumstances) so i'd say try and do the second option i mentioned (mate with chipped machine).

turn on the xbox, and after the green flubber animation, what does it say underneath the large XBox logo? Does it say Microsoft or something else?

I fitted a 160gb drive a few months back to an Xbox I'd soft modded using the Splinter Cell save.

There is another method you can use to upgrade the hdd if you don't want to remove/ swap hdd's from your Xboxes whilst they are turned on. More info here incl. links to tutorials etc. :

As long as you have torx screwdrivers to open up your Xbox and can ftp files to your pc it's pretty straightforward.

good god that reminds me of the time i first ever unlocked my original 8gb hdd to sell on after upgrading. this was back in the early evox days so it hadda be done manually on a pc by typing in the unlock code. you had one chance and one chance only to get it right. if you muffed it up that was that

                      it was like a film!
