DS Online chat?

Hey,
I'm probably way behind in what there is, but here goes.
As far as I know, Pictochat is local-only (is this correct?)
If so, what with Opera becoming available for DS but probably not providing the ability to chat unless you go to certain sites and then the usual problems of java chat being slow and all the rest of it, is there a legal, non-homebrew way to use the DS in order to chat online? Why would I want to? Well say, for example, I know someone in another country with a DS and my wife's on the PC, we'd still be able to chat to each other using the DS on wireless, see?

I believe theres a few working IRC clients now, so a PC and a DS could work in there.

but pictochat is local only, yes. in the US nintendo DS FAQ it even says they have plans for pictochat in the future and it might not be local only forever.

but if you go the homebrew route and get an irc client on your DS, you're still going to need the flash cart etc, obviously.

perhaps someone could knock up a web based chat room in php or something the ds opera browser supports, that way it would be chatting away fine.

Righto, so a dodgy irc client it is. That might be best in the long run anyway, what with being able to chat with anyone on irc and then not necessarily needing a DS.
