Changing Gamer Tag Names

I see there is an option on the 360 to change your Gamertag name but keep your achievements. Does anybody know if you also keep your friends list and they are automatically updated with the new name change or do I have to notify everybody on my friends list of the name change ?

I think it costs 800 points to change your gamertag!

They are updated automatically, I changed mine and had no problems at all.

Thought it was 700, but a couple of friends have done it.

Yeah, my friend did it and it costs 800 points. It's a bit like the server transfers in World of Warcraft which cost $25 - they don't really want you to do it because it goes against the idea of a persistent profile, but since a lot of people want it it's there if you're willing to pay for it. You could of course start a new account, but then you'd lose your achievements, friends list, and such.
