    XBMC Streaming question

    Howdy,

How do I stream stuff from my Laptop onto XBMC?

I have the Xbox connected to my router through ethernet, and my laptop is wireless going to the same router. I can access the Xbox through FTP, but when I try going to SMB Workgroup in XBMC, it cant find the laptop.

Anyone got an idiots guide to how to get it running?

    Cheers!

First step is to check your firewall , then check both the Xbox and Laptop are on the same network ( default is MSHOME believe ) .

Might be worthwhile checking out XMBC site and samba (SMB) setups if you are still stuck.

Previously it was via the xml config file , but I believe you can now set the Xbox's workgroup via the network config menu. i'd suggest reading the sites manual though because its a long time since i've farted about with it.

        Good luck.

The safest way to do it is to create a user called xbox on your pc (right click on 'my computer', select 'manage' and add the user under 'local users and groups'. Then select the folder you want to share, right click and select 'sharing and security'. Click permissions, remove everyone, click on 'add' and type xbox (if that's the name of your newly created user).

Now to set up XBMC, go to my videos or my music or whatever you want to stream and go to 'SMB share'. Press the white button and select 'edit source'. The line here should read smb://xbox:xbox@yourinternalip/name of the share.

That's it, now it should work fine.

Thanks a bunch! Got it all working.

Pictures and music work fine. But with videos, I open the file, it says caching, and then AVI file format detected and doesnt load

I can run AVI files straight from the xbox HDD but what do I need to get it streaming?

EDIT: Got videos to stream by clicking the white button and 'open using' DVD Player.

Now only thing left to get working is realmedia videos. Any idea where I can get the codecs for them?

It should play realmedia, do you have an old version of XBMC? The avi files should play when you select them too. Are you opening them from 'my videos'?

Downloaded a newer version yesterday and all works fine, although sometimes the videos freeze and have to reset.

Sometimes when I click the movie, it sounds like its loading it up, but just goes back to the selection.

Could be a problem with the files? You can always try to get yet another release, there's hundreds of them and sometimes they have bugs.
