    Japanese ps2, where to chip?

Hi guys i just brought one of those slimline ps2s back from Japan and I was wondering where was the most reliable places to get it chipped so i can use pal DVDs.

    Regards,

There is no way to use PAL DVD's on an NTSC PS2 even when modded, because the NTSC machines have a smaller framebuffer for DVD movies, and PAL movies just won't work.

A modded PAL machine will run both PAL and NTSC movies mind, funny that.

Well cheers for that mate. Might be a Jap Ps2 coming in the sales forum then.

I don't get it though mate, you bought a JPN PS2 purely as a movie player?! You can get region-hackable DVD's players for ?20 these days.

Well no. I got it primarily for the games, but the ****ter is that i have enough consoles and stuff round my TV so i sold my DVD player back in Japan because i thought I would just be able to chip this one...

          Meh!

If the PS2 does come up for sale I'll be interested.

I've got an old Japanese PS2, one of the first ones and i'm sure it plays PAL stuff fine. I'll check later to make sure if it helps.

Edited to say i just tried a disc and it doesn't work at all, it actually crashes. I'm sure i've watched stuff on it before, maybe they were all NTSC.

I bought an old (really old: SCPH-15000) Jap PS/2 from Muse Hunter (cheers) for a reasonable sum and have just got it chipped via ghost2fitter

                that's : web link

I've got to say, their service was exceptional. I phoned them to say could they put a Ghost2 chip (that's the chip from the Messiah team) into a V0 jap PS2 and they were yeah, no problem.

Once my PS2 was with them, a guy called Mark phoned and said he's done it and removed the old TOC-read-eject mod that was in there, and did I want a UK power supply put in (as they had some spares lying around) and how did I want the chip configured, i.e can my TV do PAL-60/NTSC etc.. All no extra cost. Fantastic service.

I posted it on Wednesday had it back the following Monday, excluding the weekends, that's 4 four days including a days postage either end.

He also replaced the missing rubber feet too!

I went for the Ghost2 because it's the one of the only ones to work with all PS2's including my ancient beast. It's also easier on the laser than some other chips too (not that I play backups, just imports).

Edit: Not tried with movies yet, as early japanese PS2's don't have DVD playback built-in!
