    LCD resolutions

OK, so it's not a console question but I wasn't quite sure where to ask..
Anyone know why most LCDs seem to use 1366 x 768 rather than 1280 x 720? I've yet to see anything that actually outputs at that resolution, rather than scaling...

Mainly because it's cheaper because they can use existing PC panels.

I personally prefer 1360x768 anyway, as it gives you more screen space for PC use, and any scaling of 720p is usually unnoticable.

Surely there aren't many 26"+ PC panels around, are there? And again, why do PC's use that res?

If there are lots of good reasons for it, why is 1280x720 the HD standard then - why doesn't everything do 1360x768 instead?

but the odd thing is 1360*768 isn't a doable PC resolution anyway, you can only get a far as 1360*766 (or something odd like that)

Dunno mate, but the fact that they use the screens must mean it's cheaper.

1280x720 is the standard, this whole 1366x768 thing came after.

It's really making a mountain out of a molehill though... while on paper 1280x720 sounds better because the image is mapped 1:1, the reality is that it looks essentially the same, and have the added benefit of more resolution for use on a PC. I really do prefer 1366x768 screens.

Yeah, PC's can only do multiples of 8, or something.... so it can't do 1366x768, the nearest it can do is 1360x768 with 3 lines un-used at the top and bottom. It's not something you notice though.

PCs use 1024x768 because it's the standard XGA resolution. 1366x768 is just the 16:9 resolution that you get when you maintain the same vertical res. 720p/1080i/1080p are more recent developments from when the HDTV (as opposed to PC monitors which have been around for years) standards were being developed.

So why did they choose 720p instead of 768p? Surely they thought about things first?
