Any EAC users, some encoding advice please!

Why are my mp3's bitrates not the same?

I'm using LAME to encode my mp3s and in the 'compression options/external compression box' I'm choosing 192 kBit/s for my bit rate.

However when I look at the mp3s created and checking their properties they are all different bit rates!? Why is this?

You probably have it set to 'variable bitrate'. It's a setting you can just disable, although I think it has its merits. Don't know much about it though.

Variable bitrate alters the compression "strength" depending on what's going on in the music so that for a similar sized file you get a better sound quality overall. This is fine until you try streaming the music when some older devices have a fit.

        Thanks for the reply guys.

I thought you'd fixed it but when I checked my bit rate settings in eac I found that I was using 192 kbps only, the variable bit rate settings were further down the list??

Your suggestions though sound right. Is there anyway of telling if my mp3s are variable bit rate? Or if there are any other settings within eac which might cause my mp3s to be vbr?
